The Truth Behind Impossibility
Today at 9:16pm by Low Kay Hwa's notes
Today, I’m going to write something that, I seriously hope, will inspire you.
A long time ago, people said that a man can never run 100m in less than 9.8 seconds. Just recently, Usain Bolt showed the world that a man can run 100m in less than 9.6 seconds. A long time ago, people said man can never fly. In 1903, the Wright Brothers built the first airplane, and now, everyone is flying all over the world. A long time ago, people said man can never step on moon. In 1969, Neil Armstrong planted a flag on the moon.
Sometimes, why do we choose to believe what reality is telling us?
A long time ago, I sent manuscripts to almost all the publishers in Singapore, and they all rejected me. One of them, in their rejection letter, even stated that there is not such market in Singapore. It’s either non-fiction, or ghost stories.
A long time ago, an established person in the publishing industry told me that a local unknown writer will never sell more than 100 books. That is backed up by years of history.
I believe I had done what seemed to be something impossible, possible.
How many times have you grumbled when your teacher gave you an ambitious target? How many times have you complained when your boss gave you tight deadlines? In fact, the question should be: How long a time you take to think of how impossible it is, instead of finding ways to make it possible?
About two months ago, one of my campmates told me that 10,000 fans is impossible. Part of me knows that it is true; but the other part of me know that, no matter how true reality is, facts are created by people. People defined impossibility and possibility with historical facts. If so, why not we be the ones who create the historical facts?
And, well, I hit 10,000 fans, and have set my target to 20,000 by end of September.
So, readers, wherever you are, whatever you are doing, don’t give up hope. Don’t bow to the sway of impossibility: Just remember, people said some things are impossible because it had not been done before, not because you have not done it before! Be the first!
I really hope this Note will awake something in you. It awakes something in me, because now that I’m doing this full-time, almost all of my friends think I won’t be able to survive for one year. But once again, let me be the next example: I will prove them wrong. By the end of 2009, I’ll sell over 35,000 books. Impossible? Technically, based on my sales history, yes. But if so many people have done the impossible, why should I give up?
Now, what do you want to achieve? Or I should say: What are you going to achieve after one year? Are you going to spend time thinking of how impossible it is, or spend time thinking of ways to make it possible?
